SPRINGFIELD State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) issued the following statement after the Senate passage of the Fiscal Year 2026 budget:

“Through a tough fiscal year, this budget upholds our commitment to the hardworking families and residents in our community. We are continuing to invest in our health care systems and services, prioritizing education from kindergarten to college and ensuring our senior residents can live comfortably.

“With this balanced budget, I supported the state’s continued investment into the evidence-based funding model for K-12 schools, which uplifts and strengthens education across the state and opens opportunities for youth. This, alongside increased funding for need-based financial aid through MAP grants, will help students further their education.

“The 3rd District is home to both St. Bernard and Insight Hospitals that continue to enrich our communities with compassionate, quality and accessible health care. This budget invests in safety net hospitals, including those in the 3rd District and around the state, furthering access to ensure our residents can get the care they need.

“This budget also works to uplift direct support professionals, who play a vital role in the lives of seniors, by providing an hourly wage increase, and continues our commitment to providing mental health services. Through this responsible budget, we are bolstering services members of our community rely on to ensure everyone has access to reliable and equitable resources.”
