CHICAGO State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) released the following statement Wednesday after federal agents have been seen walking around the streets of Chicago and detaining residents of the 3rd District:

“No one in our community should have to live in fear of being taken by federal agents, especially as they are heading to work, school or taking a walk with their family. Yet this is the reality our neighbors are facing, including Laura Murillo, who was taken into custody while working in Back of the Yards. She, like many others, have had to leave family and friends behind.

“I am calling on federal agencies to provide transparency in their actions and respect due process. Detaining individuals without criminal records, without explanation and without disclosing where or in what conditions they are being held, erodes trust in our communities. Every person deserves to live safely, without fear of government agents intimidating or threatening them on the street.”

Individuals are encouraged to stay informed and empowered by following trusted local organizations like the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), The Resurrection Project or Westside Justice Center on social media for the latest updates and resources.
